Nasal Aspirators
Nasal aspirator is one of the most common tool to remove nasal mucus and it is generally recommended by physicians. Because nasal congestion for long period can cause sinus infection in ears if it spreads to them.
There are many causes for this problem. An allergic reaction, an infection, a cold or teething are some of them.
You would be surprised to hear that nasal congestion is quite usual not only to newborns also to adults as well. It is known as blocked nose, nasal blockage, stuffy nose. Stuffed up nose is mild annoyance to a life threatening specially to infants since they can only breathe through the noses as well as they have not learn to blow their own noses to clear out the mucus.
Because of these reasons, it is very important for the parents to help the newborns with nasal aspirator.
There are in most cases three types.
Bulb syringe – It is a traditional type, you can get from the hospital you visited as a patient. It resembles a light bulb and usually made of rubber and fits into the palm of a hand to pump and suck. By pressing the bulb with thumb deep and place the fine tip into the congested nose and then release the thumb. This sucking motion helps vacuum the mucus.
Though it might not be that effective for the problem. Major downside of using this is the limited size, which only generates limited suction. Also, the bulb is produced in colors, you cannot see how much mucus is pumped out. It needs to be inserted several times to do the job. It would not be any problem for adults but for infants it can be stressful.
Battery powered nasal aspirators – They have fitted silicone tips. It is very simple to use. Just put the silicone tips into the nose and press a switch. As it is descried here, it seems to be more convenient to use but they are inefficient because they do not generate sufficient suction. Generally a battery powered nasal aspirator is not effective enough to remove deep inside the sinus, which is most important to remove. Also, the noise from the device might scare the infant or child.
Self suctioning nasal aspirators – They are made up of three parts in common cases. A tiny silicone tip, a receptacle, a long tube. You just place the silicone tip into the stuffed nostril and take a quick and deep breaths through the long tube, which produces high speed suction that collects and removes the mucus in the receptacle.
As you might have guessed, these aspirators depends on the user's lung capacity.
The deeper you breathe in, the more mucus is sucked out.
Even though self suctioning nasal aspirators are considered to be more effective, it is each persons preference which one to use. Some people feel uncomfortable using self suctioning nasal aspirator because of the fear of hurting their children on precessing.
Which choice you make, any of these tool can help remove a snotty problem. You should have any of them in the home medical kit.
